I recently ordered myself a copy of Nan Goldin’s seminal collection The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, and I was somehow left feeling that I was the last guy to the party. As it turns out, Nan Goldin had her first show in Boston in 1973. Coincidentally, I was born just outside of Boston, also in 1973.
Somebody posted a question into one of countless Facebook groups to which I’ve subscribed. That question was what image had the biggest impact on you?
I’ve been a really big Martin Parr fan for many years. His were some of the first images I can remember staring into, being mesmerized by. Surely there are more mesmerizing photographers and I’ve come to be exposed to far more work over the past decade or more but I’ll never forget the first time I flipped through The Last Resort photo book in my local Barnes & Noble.
Erwitt has a real skill in depicting human moments. In fact, even the wide angle cityscape images he shoots are somehow full of humanity even while being devoid of human subjects. He shoots a traffic jam and somehow makes it a fascinating study on the human condition.
